The Namibian city of Windhoek is not only the regional capital of Khomas, but the capital of the country. It is also the biggest city in the country and Namibia’s social, cultural and economic centre. All of the country’s big organisations from parliament to cultural bodies have their headquarters in the city.
People initially settled on the site of current Windhoek owing to a permanent spring in the area. It developed from there but was later destroyed by multiple battles which took part there. Its current incarnation was established in 1890 by a major in the German army.
The city lies on a semi-arid plateau, 1700 metres above sea level, and is surrounded on 3 sides, (south, west and east) by rocky mountains. Despite its inhibiting geography, Windhoek still comes in as the 3rd largest city in the world by area at 5133 square kilometres, although the population density is only 63 people per square kilometre.
The city is dry, with unusually high temperatures given its altitude and it’s surrounded by a desert landscape. Gardens don’t thrive naturally here but require fastidious watering. As a result you don’t see many. Zoo Park, a landscaped park at the city’s heart on Independence Avenue, is an exception, and comes complete with a pond, a kids’ playground and an open air theatre. Despite the lack of gardens, it is a pleasant city which is clean and neat.
While Namibia is not known for its arts, it does have a varied history, and there are many interesting monuments and buildings dotted around Windhoek. These include the Alte Feste (Old Fort), an old fort, as the name implies, now home to the national museum, the Tintenpalast (Ink Palace), which is the house of parliament, and Turnhalle, a specimen of neo-classicist Wilhelmine architecture dating back to 1909.
