Winterton Unterkünfte
Winterton is a delightful town in the heart of KwaZulu Natal. It is known for two reasons. It is the gateway to the Central Drakensberg, one of South Africa’s definitive natural attractions, a world heritage site and as the hub of a thriving farming community renowned for beef, wheat and maize.
The Drakensberg is a spectacular mountain range home to 1000’s of ancient San rock art sites and an abundance of endemic vegetation, creating numerous habitats for an array of other life forms. The area around Winterton is renowned for a number of peaks, among them Matadi and Makheke, 2 of the highest peaks in South Africa.
The town is also the main access point to Champagne Peak, so named for the first person to reach the peak, who hiked up with a bottle of bubbly to celebrate his ascent, only to drop it at the top, letting the bottle break and the champagne spill across the mountain top. Champagne Peak’s accompanying valley of the same name is famous for being the home of the Drakensberg Boys Choir, a world renowned group with voices akin to angels’.
There are myriad activities to keep you occupied when you visit Winterton. The obvious ones involve exploring the Drakensberg – hiking its peaks, searching for San rock paintings and keeping your eyes open for the range of birds and animals that inhabit its slopes. The lower slopes and surrounding areas offer wonderful horse-riding trails and there is also plenty of trout fishing to be had. The quaint, arty towns of the Natal Midlands are easily accessible as are a number of battle sites from the second Boer War.
Photographing the mountains peaks and shadows is another way to spend your time, but if all you really want is to just be still and relax, the mountain and the town’s surrounding farmlands provide the perfect backdrop for doing just that.
