Witsand Verblyf

Witsand is a small seaside village ideal for summer holidays and is also a true gem for anyone with a love of nature. The town is situated at the mouth of the Breede River, one of South Africa’s largest and most navigable rivers. It is also one of the main focal points of Witsand, the other being the beach.

Witsand is located in the Western Cape of South Africa, just three hours up the coast from Cape Town. Upon arrival, you’ll be swept up by the rustic charm of the village and your time here will be spent absorbed in the many activities available in the area.

Along the four kilometre stretch of beach, kayaking, kite-surfing and snorkelling in the rock pools are popular activities, as is lazing around on the beach or swimming in the tidal pool. If you prefer fresh water, the river offers a plethora of ways to pass the time, from fly-fishing or rock angling, to river cruises or canoeing.

Nature lovers will be more than satisfied with numerous hiking and walking trails available for the casual walkers as well as fit athletes. These take you through the farmlands or along the beach’s coastline. An intrepid kilometre return hike is Moodie’s Well, a walk that takes you along the beach and rocks to an old dug-up well. In the 1800’s, this well was used as a water supply by Scottish labourers for the Moodie family during camping and fishing trips. Several types of of birds abound both on the beach (like the endangered black oystercatchers) and on the river banks and farmlands (like the blue crane, South Africa’s national bird). St Sebastian Bay, upon which Witsand lies, is famous too as a southern right whale nursery during the spring calving season. It is touted as one of the best places in the Southern Cape to view the whales.
