Zululand Verblyf - 15
The area known as Zululand is a historically rich part of KwaZulu Natal which does justice to South Africa’s reputation for having a broad variety of biodiversity and landscapes. The area lies in the north of the province and stretches from the Indian Ocean as far as the edge of the Drakensberg Mountains.
The area covers many of South Africa’s original Zulu tribal lands- with the Zulu people being one of the 4 main indigenous language groups in South Africa. Today it incorporates diverse towns such as the port city of Richards Bay, Ulundi, (where Shaka, famous king of the Zulus, grew up), Vryheid and Eshowe.
The popular Battlefields region of KwaZulu Natal falls within the Zululand region, and is popular among history buffs who are interested in the myriad wars fought between the British, the Boers and the Zulu.
Within the area you can find gentle rolling hills, lush and green, soaring mountain peaks, Indian Ocean beaches and many game reserves too. Between the various parts of Zululand, you can visit sulphur springs and Big 5 game reserves, go hiking, mountain biking and surfing as well as partake in myriad cultural activities.
Since Zululand constitutes the Zulu heartlands, it makes sense that you can explore the culture here with various tourism outfits offering trips to visit traditional Zulu beehive huts, where you can witness traditional Zulu dances and interact with Zulu people. You can also do township tours to see how contemporary Zulu people live – visit a traditional healer, a shebeen (township bar) and a home.
In case it isn’t obvious by now, Zululandhas plenty to offer!
