The Absa Cape Epic 2016
The Absa Cape Epic takes place in the Western Cape and has been called the "Tour de France of mountain biking". Over a period of 8 days, cyclists from all over the world descend upon the Western Cape to traverse through 800km unspoilt terrain and over some of South Africa's greatest mountain ranges. The 13th edition of The Absa Cape Epic takes places from the 13 - 16 March 2016.
The cycling route changes each year, with 2016 promising even greater challenges to content with, and conquer. Both amateur enthusiasts and professional riders will embark on a demanding eight day mountain bike adventure of 739km through the Western Cape region, with an accumulative 15 000m of climbing.
Renowned for being the largest full-service stage race in the world, the race is catered and tented accommodation is provided for the riders at the overnight rest stops. There are also masseuses on call at the same rest stops as well as bike servicing and entertainment. All the cyclist needs to concern themselves with, is the riding!
The Absa Cape Epic is the most televised mountain bike stage race in the world and the only eight-day mountain bike stage race classed as hors catégorie by the Union Cycliste Interacionale (UCI). Having been granted this official status, the Absa Cape Epic is a veritable highlight on the professional racer's calendar.
Another of it's unique points is that it is a team race, and riders participate in teams of two, either racing for the champion’s title or for charity.
Not only an exciting event for riders, but the Absa Cape Epic is also a thrilling experience for spectators who can join in the fun on weekends, or be an avid spectator by following the entire duration of the race.
