Bloemfontein Rose Festival 2016
The Bloemfontein Rose Festival showcases what the 'City of Roses' is all about and happens every year in October at various venues in and around Bloemfontein. This year the festival runs from 14 - 16 October 2016.
The festival was founded in 1976 when the local community wanted to introduce Bloemfontein to the world. October was the chosen month to host the festival as roses are in full bloom during the height of Spring
The bulk of the festivals activities take place at the Urth Garden Centre, including mass flower displays by local nurseries as well as the official municipal rose festival display - an event organised by the Mangaung Municipality. Other events taking place during the event include the Rose Morning High Tea with Mareli Visser (Koekedoor FAAM) and Thabo Pitse (Bloem’s Darling) on the 15th October at 09:00, the Let's Green Bloem Expo on the 14th & 15th October from 09:00 and the Mangaung Rose Classic Cycle Tour on the 15th October run by AfriAdventures.
The rest of the festival activities take place in private gardens found all over Bloemfontein. The people of the city open their gardens to the public for viewing. Horticulturalists are also invited to take part in competitions around the city, which focus on designing and improving on unkempt gardens.
This unique festival has placed Bloemfontein on the flower map and made it a popular destination for visitors from around the world. Thousands of people attend annually to marvel at the beauty of the city of roses.
