Darling Voorkamer Festival - Postponed to 2017
The annual Voorkamerfest is considered a unique take on the traditional arts festivals that take place around South Africa. This year's run takes place from 2-4 September in the picturesque town of Darling, which is situated in the cultural epicentre of the West Coast.
Darling is home to fine wines and is the stomping ground of one of South Africa’s most long-standing comedic characters, Tannie Evita (Pieter-Dirk Uys).
In 2016, Voorkamerfest will mark 13 years of showcasing numerous genres of art, from dance, music (boasting a multitude of genres from classic to jazz and world music), theatre and comedy. What makes Voorkamer unlike any other South African arts festival is that the performances you get to see are a mixed bag of surprise, you don't know what you'll get to see nor where you’ll see it.
The modus operandi is this: you buy a ticket for the Friday, Saturday or Sunday performances. Upon arrival, you visit the ticket collection tent, where you are issued with a designated ‘route’. Throughout the weekend there are seven routes, each comprising three performances in three respective voorkamers(front rooms).
The voorkamer concept is yet another unique aspect of the festival. Instead of staging performances in conventional theatre settings, Darling locals graciously open their homes for the public to enjoy art in intimate, warm and unforgettable venues. In sticking with the festival’s flair for variety, the voorkamers range from grand old traditional Cape Dutch homes in the heart of Darling to smaller dwellings in the poorer suburbs on the outskirts of the town.
The performances in addition to the festival craft market and food fair, great scenery and excellent wines of Darling will make this a fabulous weekend away!
