Encounters Documentary Film Festival Joburg 2017
The Encounters Documentary Film Festival is Africa’s premier documentary festival, bringing remarkable South African and international documentaries to the attention of African audiences for almost 20 years.
The Encounters films traditionally incorporate a variety of feature-length and short films, all with one common thread. They tackle contemporary issues and show us parts of life and the world we might not otherwise be exposed to. As the 2013 festival director Lesedi Oluko Moche put it, “Documentaries broaden our experience of the world, showing us places few of us would otherwise see.”
In addition to broadening our minds intellectually, the documentaries at the Encounters Film Festival are a showcase of creative talent. In these films story-telling and cinematography are just two aspects that may inspire you.
A great aspect of the Encounters Festival is the line-up of guest speakers. These range from the film-makers themselves to the stars of the respective films or full panel discussions. These guest speakers will make their appearances after selected screenings and will discuss specific topics like the issues brought up in the film, the process of compiling the footage for a certain project or even answer questions about their lives as they relate to the film in question.
There are also a number of South Africa documentaries featuring this year. For the full film line-up, check the Encounters Film Festival website.
