Franschhoek Literary Festival 2018
The 11th edition of Franschhoek Literary Festival will run from the 18 to 20 May 2018 in the Franschhoek Valleys. The annual event is a festive get-together of avid readers, writers, booksellers and publishers, and is a celebration of South African literature. While a small town, Franschhoek is the chosen destination of many festivals that occur throughout the year.
The Franschhoek Literary Festival event takes on the world of books and the written word from all angles. The emphasis is on having informal discussions and spirited debates between several writers with a chairperson to mediate the event. Alternatively, festival-goers can gain insight on the art of writing in one-on-one conversations with their favourite authors. There is also a selection of fringe events that festival-goers can attend, including literary and publishers' dinners, book launches, writing workshop, a school spelling bee, wine writers' prizes and classical music concerts.
All events on the programme are lead by experts in the writing world including journalists, editors, authors and poets and they engage the audience on a number of topics across genres.
This literary festival is primarily concerned with promoting the love for books and reading within the Franschhoek Valley communities. To this end the Franschhoek Literary Festival organisers have, over the last 5 years, successfully run the Book Week for Young Learners event, where some 46 children’s authors visit schools around the valley, with the intention of engaging youngsters in captivating stories and book-centric conversations. Furthermore, a portion of the event revenue goes into the FLF Library Fund, a long-term goal to build a community library in the valley.
