Hopefield Fynbos Show 2017
The Hopefield Fynbos Show is a popular annual event held in August in Hopefield, some 120km from Cape Town. This year the show is taking place from August 24th to August 27th 2017.
Hopefield is the oldest town on the West Coast, as it was founded in 1851.
Hopefield has over 500 different species of natural fynbos year round, four botanical zones and indigenous spring daisies that appear after winter rains during August and September. All of this makes it a prime spot for botanists and flora enthusiasts. Fine fynbos honey is also produced here.
Every August, the Hopefield Fynbos Show exhibits the breathtaking and diverse flora of the Swartland region. The Hopefields Sports Centre is made over into a flower hall for the occassion, and plants are arranged as authentically as possible to give visitors a realistic look at the species of fynbos indigenous to the area.
Hikers can also walk the Langrietvlei and Helderwater trails to get a more up close and person view of the Hopefield Flora. Those who prefer a more relaxed pace can stroll through the flower route instead.
Vistors to the show can also enjoy lunch and tea on site and browse the stalls selling a variety of traditional and local produce (such as waterblommetjiebredie). There is also a beer garden featuring live music from popular local musicians, a petting zoo with farm animals and hosted tractor rides across the farm.
After attending the show, visitors could make a detour to the fossil museum at the Hopefield Visitor Information Centre in the main street. There, fossils excavated from Elandsfontein, near Saldanha Bay, are on display including a replica of the hominid skull 'Saldanha Man'. Further along this street is an example of a Hartebeeshuisie, one of the traditional reed houses for which the area is well known.
The show will be open daily from 9am to 5pm.
