Ironman African Championship 2019
If swimming in choppy seas, cycling vast distances and stomping the pavement with a 42km run gets your adrenaline pumping, then you'd best register for The Standard Bank Ironman African Championship taking place on the 7th April 2019.
Officially joining the ranks of the Ironman Championship series as the African continental Championship race, the superhuman race is a veritable test of one's stamina, strength and endurance.
Annually held in Port Elizabeth, known to locals as the 'windy city', the area boasts an abundance of wild beauty indigenous to South Africa and the Eastern Cape and is also home to a multitude of historic and cultural attractions.
Participants will start off with one-lap 3.8km swim course at the blue-flag Hobie Beach, heading out parallel to Shark Rock Pier turning left after 300 metres. The course then goes past Humewood Beach all the way to Kings Beach before turning and heading back towards Hobie Beach.
The bike course takes athletes out on two flat, fast laps of 90 km on one of the most spectacular bike courses on the IRONMAN circuit. The route takes athletes along the coast at Marine Drive, delivering sweeping views of the ocean and the rugged coastline along a marine protected area, before moving slightly inland at Seaview on an undulating scenic countryside section. Athletes return along the coast to the transition area to start the run.
The run course brings athletes closer to their fans and friends than ever thanks to four loops along Marine Drive and the event's famous crowds of 80 000-plus spectators
