Maboneng Gugulethu Arts Experience 2015
The Maboneng Township Art Experience 2015 aims to address the stigma attached to South Africa’s townships through the arts. This unique initiative transforms regular township homes into bustling art galleries as a means to unite, empower and inspire communities and artists.
The Guguletu Experience, which is now in it's forth year running, is set to take place on the 29th of November 2015. The event promises to bring the best of street art, visual artists, and performance arts to the Cape Town township of Gugulethu.
Private homes will be converted into galleries, while public spaces and outdoor areas transformed into stages and performance districts.
Gugulethu is the pride of the Western Cape, and the most colorful and enchanting of all townships. It is known for its spirit of ubuntu, social cohesion and its hub of cultural and creative activities.
Maboneng is named after the SeSotho word for ‘a place of lights’, a name given to Alexandra Township in Johannesburg where the brainchild that is the Maboneng Township Arts Experience was originally conceived. Essentially, it is a public arts intervention that works with homeowners from different townships all around South Africa to turn their places of residence into art galleries. Together with gallery-home owners, festivals and permanent art homes called TAGs (Township Art Galleries) are created.
In addition to the visual displays of art, festival-goers can enjoy film screenings, live music and various dance and theatre productions, township cuisines, skate and bike rides and simultaneously creating skills and sustainable employment.
The initiative creates an intimate authenitc art environment, while creating skills and sustainable employment in the areas that desperately need it.
