Orpheus in Africa 2015
David Kramer's musical, which was premiered to the South African public earlier on in the year, is back after its widely successful first run - having received rave reviews, sold out performances and standing ovations. The show will run from Friday 9 October 2015 - Saturday 9 January 2016 at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town.
The musical tells the coveted tale about the world-renowned Mcadoo Virginia Jubilee singers on their South African visit in the late 19th century. Orpheus Mcadoo was a resilient character who fought against his slave status to become a graduate from The Hampton Institute in Virginia. He was then recognised as the first African American impresario to perform in the British colony of South Africa where he and his musical group achieved resounding success.
Audience members can expect an array of jubilant classics - like Swing Low Sweet Chariot and Deliver Daniel - as well as original pieces composed by Kramer.
The roles of Orpheus and his beloved, Mattie Allen, will be played by the highly acclaimed Audrey Poo and Lynelle Kennerd who will be forming part of a star-studded 17-man company.
The show is described as a vibrant reenactment bringing to light a forgotten aspect of South African history.
