Soweto Wine Festival 2018
The 13th edition of Soweto Wine and Lifestyle Festival runs from 1-2 September 2018 and is set to reinvent Soweto's wine and food experience.
With limited capacity to showcase South Africa’s finest wines to the trendsetters from across the globe, this festival has transformed the shape of the wine industry over the past decade with multi-tiered opportunities for wineries to selectively handpick the audience they wish to exhibit their finest varietals to.
The festival is the brainchild of Mnikelo Mangciphu, owner of the Morara Wine and Spirit Emporium, Soweto’s only wine shop, and Marilyn Cooper, CEO of the Cape Wine Academy, based in Johannesburg. As many good ideas are, this one was conceived as the two sat around drinking cheap wine out of plastic cups.
The festival was designed to bring the Western Cape’s most acclaimed wines into Gauteng, and more specifically into Johannesburg’s biggest township, to expose the Soweto population to the country's prestigious wine-drinking cultures. The festival has expanded over the years to incorporate various lifestyle elements, including food and travel, although of course, the emphasis is primarily on the wines.
In between sampling varietals, visit the numerous travel exhibitors if you're looking to plan your next holiday. For the hungry, a wide choice of cuisine is available from Johannesburg's top-notch restaurants, bistros and food vendors.
