A Champion Day Of Food, Fun & Festivities
The Matchem Stakes is a fitting start to the Cape Town #SummerOfChampions Season and is a race as rich in history as it will be entertainment this year.
The earliest record of the Matchem Stakes dates back to 1958 when it was run over 1400m at Kenilworth Racecourse, with just 6 runners facing the starter. The prestigious contest was moved to Durbanville Racecourse in 2010.
Last year’s event saw the Eric Sands-trained Rainbow Bridge victorious under jockey Bernard Fayd’herbe. The smashing son of Ideal World was to go on and win the 2019 Sun Met, as well as the Gr1 Champions Cup and was a flying second in the Vodacom Durban July – establishing himself in the top echelon of our star racers for last last season.
Apart from some of South Africa’s finest equine athletes competing on the day, so too will their human counterparts as the annual Jockey Charity Chase is carded. Whilst the field is yet to be confirmed, the friendly rivalry amongst the jockeys will provide great spectator entertainment. Each jockey will be sponsored by various stakeholders within the industry and will run in their registered colours, with all proceeds from the race being donated towards the Western Cape Equine Trust.
Whether it’s the horses and jockeys , or the promise of a brilliant day out for the whole family, this a day out that won’t disappoint. The Market at the Barn will be on course for the day and homeware stalls, arts and crafts, as well as home industry items, will make for leisurely browsing between races.
Guests can expect a casual, relaxed day on course – a perfect way to soak up the Spring sunshine in Cape Town. For the culinary-inclined, there will be a potjiekos competition on course, which has a share of R35 000 up for grabs (T&C’s apply).
The best themed potjie will also win a Boer & Butcher hamper and voucher - so get creative and wow the judges! If you rate your odds and think the potjie could be your best bet of the day, visit the Boer and Butcher in Durbanville to fill in an entry form and take your place on the starting line-up on 5 October.
With live entertainment, a kiddies play area and live screening of the rugby world cup (England vs Argentina), the whole family is in for a day of food, fun and festivities. Gates open at 9am for the early birds with a brekkie special – buy a breakfast bun and get a free coffee. So take your seats early before kick-off and enjoy your caffeine fix on us!
