Township and Township 2015
The Maboneng Township Experience will once again be opening Gugulethu up to the public for their annual art festival. The event takes place on the 29 November 2015 at various venues in and around the prominent township, which is located in Cape Town.
The initiative is the brainchild of local artist, Siphiwe Ngwenya who felt the profound absence over the awareness and appreciation of art among the Gugulethu residents. To rectify this, Ngwenya started exhibiting art pieces on street corners, and soon a number of other artists become involved in the project. The idea soon spread, with the homes of Gugulethu residents being converted into galleries, and open spaces into stages for a variety of performances.
Despite its humble roots, The Maboneng Township experience has grown exponentially and is widely recognised as a national arts initiative. It is both a platform for up-and-coming artists and a means to end negative perceptions about townships by presenting them as epicentres for art.
The line up of this art experience includes a comprehensive tour of Gugulethu and the various galleries. Visitors can enjoy live performances of African music, various theatre productions, film productions and the exhibition of various art pieces.
