Lydenburg Unterkünfte - 2

Lydenburg is a pretty little town in the heart of Mpumalanga. It is situated 290 kilometres from Pretoria and just a little further from Johannesburg, making it a really convenient destination. There is enough to do there to warrant a trip to Lydenburg alone, but it is also popular as a stop-over point en route the Kruger National Park.

Surrounded by mountain ranges like Steenkampsberg and Mauchsberg, at the foot of Long Tom Pass (the main wagon route which connected Mozambique to South Africa’s interior) and lying on the banks of Sterkspruit, a tributary of the Olifants River, it is not hard to imagine that Lydenberg has an exceptionally pretty setting. It can put even the most harried of city brains into a state of calm, which is why it is popular.

The town was established in 1849 by Voortrekkers under the leadership of Andries Potgieter. Its establishment was followed by a gold rush, following the discovery of alluvial gold in the area, and later underwent massive changes during the Anglo-Boer War.

Today though it is a tranquil spot on Mpumalanga’s Highlands tourist route, which attracts an eclectic mix of people including some talented artists. For example, within the town are painters, sketchers, wood carvers and potters, some of whom sell and display their work, others of whom are content with a quiet, undiscovered existence.

The town is also surrounded by numerous nature reserves where one can indulge in a spot of bird watching, walking and game-viewing. Its most notable attribute however, is as a hotspot on South Africa’s fly-fishing scene, with many pleasant, quiet spots to immerse yourself with fresh air, green nature and your own thoughts.
