Yzerfontein Logement
Yzerfontein is a tiny settlement roughly 90 kilometres outside of Cape Town. It lies on the beautifully rugged West Coast and can be reached via a turn-off on the R27 – the coastal road which stretches from Cape Town all the way to the Namibian border. The town has a permanent population of just less than 2000, giving an indication of its inevitable small-town feel. There are no towering hotels here, instead Yzerfontein offers visitors cosy and characterful guest houses and self-catering cottages.
Yzerfontein, as with most of the small towns along the West Coast, was traditionally a fishing village. Today fishing is still an important pillar of the town’s economy, but it shares the limelight with Yzerfontein’s tourism industry. In proportion to the size of the town, its tourism industry is relatively large.
Yzerfontein’s charm lies in that it is a small town in a beautiful environment, and many people are content to go there and ‘just be.’ However, if you are not one of those people, never fear. Yzerfontein is home to the longest sandy beach on South Africa’s coastline, known as 16 Mile Beach. This beach makes for great early morning or late afternoon strolls, and for the ambitious, you can walk from Yzerfontein all the way to the West Coast National Park.
The West Coast National Park, a short drive outside of Yzerfontein, is home to an abundance of bird life, a number of antelope species and is a great place to see the wild flowers during the inevitable spring time spread (from August to October).
The bay is popular for body-boarding and kite-surfing. Other activities include bird-watching, angling, and if you’re prepared to drive, a visit to the !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre. Some private nature reserves in the area also offer hiking and 4x4 trails which will satisfy the adventurous among you.
