Riversdale Logement
Riversdale is a town at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the Garden Route in the Western Cape province. It lies on the N2 between George and Cape Town.
Riversdale is well- known for the bursts of colour which paint the town in the spring and winter months, when the flowers flourish thanks to the rain. Many of the flowers which grow in the area, especially Proteas and Ericas are harvested for export. The town’s floral prowess is showcased annually at a popular flower show, held each September. Agathosma, a species of buchu with myriad healing properties is also exported.
Riversdale is on the Eden Country Route, which showcases some lovely South African farms and provides a glimpse into real country life. It is the town’s honey-bush industry which earns the town its spot on the route.
The mountains also provide a number of exciting, more vigorous ventures that include 4x4 trails, abseiling and mountain biking. The Korentepoort Dam is a great spot for picnics, canoeing, fishing and windsurfing. A really lovely way to experience Riverdale’s flora is to hike in the surrounding mountains, which promises a challenging but rewarding experience.
Riversdale also has some historical and cultural offerings such as the Julius Gordon Africana Centre which houses paintings by Thomas Bowler among others and an interesting antique collection. CJ Langehoven, aka the father of the Afrikaans language, called Riversdale home for a few years. Langehoven wrote the poem, Die Stem, from which the South African national anthem borrows some lines.
If you consider yourself a plant enthusiast, or simply enjoy the laidback vibe of a farming town flanked by beautiful mountains. Riversdale should undoubtedly make your bucket list!
