Albertinia Logement
Albertinia is a quaint, coastal village in the Western Cape, situated just 50 km’s west of the thriving hub that is Mossel Bay. It was first established in the early 1900’s, forming part of the great Grootfontein farm, before being incorporated into the Eden District Municipality in 1920. Today, a visit to Albertinia is akin to travelling back in time, with the sleepy town not having undergone many changes since its establishment; it closely resembles a 19th-century trading post.
Locals and holidaymakers are in agreement that this tranquil stretch of the Western Cape is an ‘eco-paradise’, with breathtaking views overlooking the coast and the foothills of the sprawling Langeberg mountain range. Nature lovers will be enthralled by the vast collection of 6500 Cape Fynbos varieties, only indigenous along South Africa’s coastline.
Apart from the wide variety of fynbos, travellers can also feast their eyes upon the sheer abundance of aloes – which grow in vast quantities throughout Albertinia. The town’s claim to fame is that it is South Africa’s largest manufacturer of Aloe juice. The extracts of the juice have multiple uses in the beauty and skincare industries, so to meet demands, Albertinia has built two aloe factories in the area. Daily tours are available to the public where you will not only be given extensive knowledge about the aloe plant, but also the opportunity to purchase a wide range of beauty and skincare products.
While Albertinia primarily relies upon its aloe manufacturing for sustenance, it is also a thriving farming community with a large agricultural sector. If holidaymakers drive through Albertinia, they will have the opportunity to view acres upon acres of livestock farms boasting an array of animals – think cattle, sheep and ostriches.
Commercialised thatch reed is another important source of income for both farmers and manual labourers. Found only in the areas between Gouritz and Breede Rivers, the reed is historically significant as the age-old Cape Dutch Houses, which are scattered throughout Albertinia, are thatched with this particular varietal. It’s still a popular thatching choice today because it is strong and long lasting.
While bungee enthusiasts now flock to Bloukrans, it may come as a surprise for many to learn that Albertinia is home to the original bungee site, the historical Gourits River Drift Route. Many a passer-by will fondly reminisce over the thrill of jumping over this old bridge.
