Nestled along the banks of the Great Fish River, Cradock is a historical town that was originally intended as a Boer fort to contain the Xhosa, who sought grazing grounds in this part of the Cape. Today, it stands as a serene yet quintessential Karoo farming town, recognized as the capital of the Karoo Heartland and renowned for producing some of the country’s finest wool and mohair. Cradock has witnessed significant moments in South Africa’s history; it was a key location for the Great Trek and thrived during the ostrich boom of the early 1900s, a period that brought prosperity to local farmers a resurgence now fueled by demand for fine leather and low-cholesterol meat.

The town is perhaps best known for its natural sulphur spring, which has become the centrepiece of a modern spa, attracting visitors nationwide to its open-air and indoor heated pools. Beyond its spa, Cradock boasts architectural treasures, including the Dutch Reformed Church, a national monument designed to resemble London’s St Martin-in-the-Fields, and the Olive Schreiner House Museum, dedicated to the life and works of the famous author.

The streets are adorned with Ilex Oak trees, especially along Dundas Street, which has been declared a national monument, while visitors can explore the fully restored Old Water Mill and the Great Fish River Museum, housed in a converted second Dutch Reformed church, offering insights into settler life after 1806 during the second British occupation of the Cape.
