Montagu is the heart of Route 62. The village boast various styles of building, including Victorian, Edwardian, Georgian etc. It is located in the biggest soft fruit producing area in South Africa, and is surrounded by mountain. The village became famous for it's natural mineral Springs, still found here today
ROUTE 62 is the historical route which was the main link between Port Elizabeth, the Garden Route and Cape Town before the N2 highway was built.
It is not only offers a 70 km shorter option between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, but also runs through the most beautiful mountain passes, alternated by typical Klein Karoo vegetation, vineyards and fruit Orchards. It passes through 14 beautifully preserved villages where time has stood still for 40 years..
The Robertson Wine Route just outside Montagu offers a diversity of estates ranging from estates with incredible Cape Dutch Homesteads to informal tastings in the most incredible Gardens with history attached to every tree planted. One thing all farms have in common: they are all un commercialized and guests are treated like royalty.
The magic of this area is its wonderful dry healthy climate, nature walks, 4X4 routes, cycling, top cuisine and for those who like country living - one can use the BreŽrivier Winelands as the base from where one can visit Cape Town and the whole of the Western Cape. Indeed "ROUTE 62" do not have to stand back for it's legendary and by now world famous sister, Route 66, in the USA.
