In 1939, John Thomas Thorn, (Baas Jan - Lion of the mountains) who traded in Roma, was invited by Chief Ramabanta (Father of the Belts) Api, to build a trading store on the cliff-edge, overlooking the Makhaleng River valley. This was a Frontier Post, there being no other trading stores between Ramabanta and Qacha's Nek in the east.
The Thorn family of Roma and McCarthy family from Maseru, joined forces in 2003 to convert the residential area of the trading post into a tourism destination and so Ramabanta Lodge was born. The Lodge, 70km from Maseru, the last 15km being gravel, is an ideal stop-over on your way to Semonkong. Wonderful view of the Thaba Putsoa Range, breath taking hikes and pony rides, a place to find one's self and relax.
Ramabanta Lodge is the focal point of all 4x4 ing and off-road motor biking in Lesotho. The Lodge hosts annually the service point for the Roof of Africa Rally that traverses some of the most difficult trails in the world.Ramabanta is situated on the road to Semonkong, 55km away from the Guiness Record highest abseil Waterfall in the world (212m)

Some guests in the camping site does not have consideration for other guests in the lodge. They disturb the peace with loud music all through the night. We suggest that there should be rules regarding this.

An oasis of good accommodation in a desert of dodgy places. The approach to Ramabanta is misleading. Our hearts sank as we drove down the baboon path to the lodge, but once there we were very pleased with the beautiful garden stretching out around us. The rooms were spacious and clean. We had a bit of trouble with the gas heater, but Mpho sent Speedy the handyman and all was well.
We were not given the Self catering acc we had booked, however Mpho came to the rescue and supplied us with all the necessary for a braai on our doorstep. We had the dinner one evening, somewhat bland and price quite steep for the tour group food that we got. Rather do your own thing. All in all one of our best stayovers (2nights) in Lesotho.
Make sure that people are placed in the accommodation they booked. According to Mpho they only receive a list with names.
Improve on the evening meals which are too expensive R225 pp for a very mediocre meal.
