Rich in fynbos and bird life, Hermanus has much to offer the outdoor enthusiast. Lovely hikes and picnic spots abound along with pristine beaches, amongst which is the famed blue flag Grotto Beach, just a 5 minute-drive from Selkirk House.
The house overlooks the 27-hole Hermanus golf course, while the famous Arabella golf course is a mere 20 minutes' drive away.
Wine lovers can visit some well-known estates in the beautiful Hemel & Aarde Valley and other wine regions like Stanford and Bot River.
Pretty coastal towns in the area include Rooi Els, Pringle Bay, Betty's Bay with its botanical Gardens, Kleinmond, Pearly Beach and Arniston.
Visit Kleinriver cheese farm near Stanford for a riverside picnic or the famous caves at De Kelders. At Gansbaai great white sharks can be observed from a boat or a diving cage. The lighthouses at Danger Point and L'Agulhas are interesting to see and a more extended visit to the Bontebok Park near Swellendam or the De Hoop Nature Reserve east of Bredasdorp will be well worthwhile. Selkirk House forms the perfect base for exploring some of the interesting inland towns like Greyton, Genadendal, Grabouw, Caledon, Bredasdorp, Napier and Riviersonderend.
