Welcome to a South African Yurt getaway!

Yurts are part of some of the most unique weekend escapes in the UK, Europe and other parts of the world - and now Southern Yurts has brought this memorable getaway experience to the Overberg! Stay in the comfort of your own Yurt: enjoy a local wine while watching the sun set over the nature conservancy, a walk through our Secret Forest, or a candle-lit shower under the stars.

The space
Porcupine Hills Guest Farm forms part of the Diepklowe Nature Conservancy, located 16 km from Botrivier along the Van der Stel Pass. This stunning location forms the perfect setting to experience a getaway in a Yurt.

Nestled on a sloping hill that overlooks the raw beauty of the nature conservancy, the North-facing yurt is positioned for the perfect sunrise and sunset. Walk out onto a landing that has been built out of a 90-year old stone wall, and into your distinctive kitchen with fireplace. A couple of meters away you can enjoy the privacy and comfort of a hot shower in our beautiful and enclosed bathroom unit. Nothing about this accommodation is ordinary - if you're looking for an original and comfortable stay in breathtaking nature, the Yurt will provide it all.

Yurt Facilities:
The Yurt (bedroom) is equipped with all bedding and towels, spare blankets, a blow-fan/heater, a hot water bottle for cooler evenings, a chest of drawers, binoculars and wildlife/tree books, other reading material and playing cards. Charging points are located next to the bed.

The kitchen is fully equipped with all the essentials: tea, coffee, sugar, olive oil, salt and pepper. As a self-catering kitchen, it is equipped with a kettle, toaster, small fridge, double gas cooking plate, fireplace, and includes crockery, pots, utensils and cutlery. We supply firewood, matches and firelighters (more wood can be bought at R40 per crate if needed).

The bathroom has a gas-geyser hot water shower, with toilet and basin. Shampoo, soaps, hand-lotion and toilet paper is provided, as well as your towels/hand towels.

DOGS:
As animal lovers and owners, we are pet-friendly (this must be pre-arranged/stated upon booking), but we do charge an additional cleaning fee of R100 per pet per stay, payable in cash upon arrival. This covers the unavoidable extra cleaning that our dear furry friends bring to the site.

Pets are accepted on the condition that you bring their own beds, and that pets do not sleep on the bed, couches or cushions.

The Farm:

Porcupine Hills Guest Farm has a wide range of activities on the farm premises and in the local region:

The Yurt is located next to our Secret Forest, a gentle riverine area scattered with fruit trees that are decades old. Feel free to have a swing under the ancient Oak, or a stroll through our budding fruit orchard adjacent to the river. Pick a fruit from a historic fig tree over 6 m tall, or a pomegranate for your morning fruit salad (season dependent!).

When you want to be near the water, enjoy a light 5 minute walk to our dam - swim it's length, or enjoy a Sundowner on a moving raft in the dam centre. On summer days, the cool shade from the weeping willows can be life-saving.

For guests that would like to explore more of the Conservancy, there are a number of hikes around the farm that give you spectacular views and expose an incredible array of flora unique to the region. Mountain bikers can cycle on nearby farms, with the most notable trails being on Paul Cluver (20-30 mins from Porcupine Hills).

For bird lovers, Porcupine Hills Guest Farm is a small oasis. Whether it's a rare spotting of our resident Coots on the dam, or a Verreaux Eagle soaring over the rocky cliffs, there will be plenty of feathered reasons to bring your binoculars.

If you're staying a bit longer and would like to discover the area a little more, there are a number of activities for all ages. The nearby highly acclaimed Cape Canopy Tours offers an exhilarating soar by zip line over the Overberg mountains. If it's a day of wine tasting on one of the many world-renowned Cape wine farms that captures your interest, you can find a farm that suits your taste within a 50 km radius. For more exciting activities in the area, from horse riding to lion viewing, please refer to our info-brochure in our accommodation or contact us via email.

WIFI:

We have unlimited wifi in our reception lounge (which you will have full access to during your stay), however the Yurt space itself doesn't have wifi.

ROADS:

Please note that the farm can only be accessed by a gravel road. This road is in good condition and is drivable by any car type. If you are driving in a small car, it's best to take the drive slowly, so maybe add a few extra minutes to your ETA.

The traditional Mongolian ger, or Yurt, as we know it, is traditionally a tent-like structure that has a wooden frame covered by felt and skins. Our design has taken a more contemporary approach, with canvas instead of skins, and offers guests a unique glamping experience with the comfort of a soft, clean bed. The Yurt site is equipped with a self catering kitchen and bathroom (separate to the Yurt), as well as a wood-fired soak tub. The site is private and offers beautiful views of the farm and nature conservancy,
