Accommodation near Addo Elephant National Park - 2
The Addo Elephant National Park is South Africa’s 3rd largest national park. It is located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, about 72 kilometres from the city of Port Elizabeth, making it an extremely rewarding and accessible game reserve.
The national park was proclaimed in 1931 when there were no more than 16 elephants in the area. It is a true success story as the reserve is now home to over 550 elephants as well as numerous other species. It covers an impressive stretch of land – 180 000 hectares in total.
The park encompasses a wide range of vegetation types and in turn supports a diverse variety of animal and bird species. It stretches from the semi-arid Karoo area in the north, over the imposing Zuurberg Mountains, across the Sundays River Valley and south to the coast where the Sundays River and the Bushman’s River meet the Indian Ocean.
There are further plans to extend the park to encompass the marine area too. The area proposed for the marine section of the area boasts a number of small islands which include the second largest breeding ground for African penguins in the world and the largest breeding population of Cape gannets.
The reserve boasts one of South Africa’s best showcases of African wildlife and is proudly home to the big five. The big 5 includes elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion and leopard. They are known as the big 5 because they were the hardest animals to hunt either owing to their stealth or aggressiveness.
Another draw card for the park is that unlike the Kruger National Park, it is a malaria-free area.

The town of Addo is really struggling with the effects of the lockdown, couldn't find anywhere besides the Kraal to eat or buy any kind of takeaways. But the Park is wonderful. We saw lots of elephants a well as other game and loads of birds, even though the bush is very dense. The underground hide at Main Camp Addo is very well placed and we had wonderful sightings of elephant there. The restaurant at Main Camp is good and good value for money.
