Accommodation near Augrabies Falls National Park

The Augrabies Falls National Park is one of six national parks located in the Northern Cape province and is located 120 km north-west of Upington. Its name is derived from the Khoi word 'Aukoerebis', which means 'place of great noise'.

The park covers an area of 820 square kilometres and follows the course of the great Orange River - from Kakamas to the Namibian border. Tourists who visit the park during the rainy season will see great volumes of waters moving at high speeds through the 18km stretch of the river gorge, before cascading down the 56-metre Augrabies Waterfall. Visitors will find that the waterfall is a majestic sight to bear witness to. Travel a little further, and you'll find that the surrounding area is characterised by the near-deafening sounds of falling water.

Due to its hot and arid terrain, vegetation is quite sparse and only the most adaptable of wildlife reside in the area. Despite these conditions, visitors will enjoy a rich game viewing experience. You'll be able to spot bird varietals, reptiles and several species of mammal - think springbok, gemsbok, klipspringer and giraffe. Nature-lovers will be entranced by the flora and fauna indigenous to the area, succulents and shrubberies, which have developed unique adaptation tactics to survive the area's unrelenting temperature extremities.

Throughout the park, there are a number of excellent viewing sites to visit, including Oranjekom, Ararat and Echo Corner. These sites provide scenic views that overlook the river and the gorge. Echo Corner, as the name would suggest, is characterised by the sounds of eerie echoes.

Drives, walks and numerous outdoor activities are also offered by the park. These range from overnight hiking routes to game drives and canoeing on the Orange River.

Augrabies is truly a hidden gem of SA. The night drive at Augrabies National Park is really great and it gives you the opportunity to see the falls at night with the spotlights shining - amazing! The river rafting is also SUPER fun. Augrabies is definitely a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city life.

Augrabies is asemrowend. Was baie bly ons het die draai gery om dit te sien. Wil weer gaan. Het baie tyd spandeer op die uitkyk plekke, veral Ararat. Augrabies is een van die plekke om te sien in SA.
