Accommodation near Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum
Bredasdorp is a small town in the Southern Overberg region in the Western Cape. It is 160 kilometres from Cape Town and 35 kilometres from Cape L’Agulhas. It lies just inland from a notorious stretch of coast line, often referred to by locals as the ‘Ships’ Cemetery’.
The name refers to a 120 kilometre section of the south coast between Danger Point and Cape Infanta. Over a relatively short period of time, no fewer than 130 vessels were wrecked on the rocks between these two points.
The ships and shipwrecks have played an indisputable role in the development of the area, from the names of many of the small settlements, to the populations who made up these settlements, many of whom were survivors from the various wrecks. For example, the idyllic town of Arniston is named after a shipwreck, as is Miles Barton Reef and Northumberland Point!
In 1967 a group of locals opened the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum. It was opened in a beautiful old church, which is as much an attraction in itself as the museum artefacts which it houses. With the history such as this coast’s, it was only a matter of time before someone decided to pay tribute to all the ships which ran aground nearby. It makes for a very interesting visit and is the only museum of its kind in South Africa.
The museum’s accoutrement of artefacts consists solely of donated items, given to the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum by people who support its goal of celebrating and remembering the role the ships played along the coast. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth a visit.
