Kalafong Hospital is a public hospital situated in Pretoria, the capital city of Gauteng. It is found in the western outskirts of the city, next to the suburb of Atteridge. It is roughly 12 kilometres from the centre. The hospital is a tertiary health care facility and is utilised by the University of Pretoria’s faculty of health sciences as a teaching hospital.

As a tertiary hospital, the community that the hospital cares for is made up of patients who have been referred there from either primary or secondary health care facilities. This happens when their ailment requires more sophisticated treatment. As a public hospital Kalafong cannot claim the kind of resources that a private institution might, but the care it provides is solid none-the-less.

Kalafong Hospital was constructed in the 1960’s and opened its doors to the first patients in 1972. However it was only officially (and publicly) opened the following year. Today it is a multidisciplinary hospital offering a range of care from orthopaedics and general medicine to surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology. There are also ancillary services such as occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

As a teaching hospital, in addition to the employed registrars and medical officers, there is always an accoutrement of medical students, interns and community service doctors on hand. Some of the hospital’s special units, which are especially valuable to both patients and young doctors, focus on things like infectious diseases, neonatology & kangaroo mother care, and paediatric genetics.

The neonatology department is highly specialised and in addition to the neonatal intensive care unit, high care unit and observation unit, there is also a 20 bed ward set aside for mothers and babies practising the kangaroo mother care method (research shows that premature babies do better when they have skin-on-skin contact with their mothers). A large emphasis is also placed on the value of breast-feeding.
