Lanseria International Airport is Gauteng’s second airport. Unlike OR Tambo in Johannesburg, Lanseria is a private airport, and South Africa’s largest privately owned airport at that. The airport has a convenient location for business travellers, being very close to Sandton, Johannesburg’s business hub, as well as within 50 kilometres of major business centres in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Lanseria Airport, which has been in operation for roughly 30 years, began, as a lone airstrip in a rural area outside of Pretoria. Over the years both the city of Pretoria and the airstrip grew. Today Lanseria International Airport consists of a spacious and stylish terminal building, an upgraded airstrip and multiple hangars and workshops.
The airport has undergone numerous upgrades in its lifetime, the most recent being an upgrade of the tarmac in 2002 and the second expansion of the terminal building in 2010. Today services offered to passengers at the airport include those that you would expect at any international airport; secure parking, restaurants, executive lounges, restaurants, shops (selling anything from food and souvenirs books) and airport transfers.
Lanseria International Airport is most commonly served by South Africa’s low-cost airlines, Mango and Kulula, with the most common routes being Lanseria - Cape Town and Lanseria - Durban.
In addition to regular passenger services, Lanseria Airport is also home base for a number of charter companies, domestic and international mercy flights and other emergency evacuation operators.
