Accommodation near Mitchell Park Zoo
The Mitchell Park Zoo (simultaneously known
as Mitchell’s Park Zoo) is situated in a lovely suburb near Durban’s city
centre. Its main, and quite legitimate claim to fame, is as the city’s only
zoo. As such it is a popular place to visit, especially among young families.
The zoo is situated in Morningside, one of
Durban’s success stories. Once being the realm of the city’s wealthy and their
Victorian and Edwardian mansions, the area fell into disrepair. However, after
a successful gentrification drive, the suburb is once again brimming with
gorgeous homes – many of which have been converted into offices – and the zoo
is just one attraction among many in the area.
The zoo started out as an ostrich farm in
1910, but when the owner realised that ostriches weren’t very profitable,
animals were added to make the place more attractive to visitors. The
accoutrement grew and at one point it was even home to an Indian elephant named
Nellie. Nellie was a gift from the Maharajah of Mysore in 1928 and became
famous for her abilities to crack coconuts with her feet and blow a mouth
organ. These days though the largest inhabitant is a giant tortoise. There are
also South American monkeys, blue duiker, racoons and a walk-through aviary.
In addition to the animals themselves, the
Mitchell Park Zoo boasts a lovely tea garden and a wide lawn perfect for
picnicking. For kids there is a dedicated playground, while adjacent to the zoo
is Jameson Park, a rose garden with over 200 species of roses.
