Accommodation near Pilanesberg Game Reserve

The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is named after the Pilanesberg Mountains which the reserve boundary encircles. The mountains in turn, are said to get their name from a Tswana chief, Pilane, who reigned in this area. 'This area' refers to a section of South Africa's North West province, traditional stomping ground of the Tswana people, which lies close to the provincial capital, Rustenburg as well as Gauteng's mega city, Johannesburg.

The reserve's geography is extraordinary and is one of the things which make it such a desirable place to visit. Unlike how you normally imagine the structure of a mountain to be, the Pilanesberg consists of 3 concentric rings or ridges, bearing a distinct resemblance to a bowl. This bizarre formation is the result of a volcanic explosion which occurred over 1200 million years ago. It blew out the centre of the 'bowl', leaving the strangely shaped rock formations behind. The rocks here are rich in minerals, something which is of great interest to geologists. Just outside the reserve platinum, one of the more lucrative minerals is mined.

The centre of this bowl is now the heart of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, and is a haven for many plant and animal species. Owing to its location in a transitional zone, the area has both karoo and lowveld vegetation types, providing a huge amount of biodiversity in the 572 square kilometre reserve.

It is this diversity which attracts the average tourist, who wants to experience the African bush and all the critters, big and small, which it has to offer. And some of its critters are very big indeed, like the elephants, rhinos and buffalos which roam there. Pilanesberg Game Reserve is a big 5 reserve and is conveniently located close to big cities and other attractions like Sun City.

Pilanesberg Reviews

The Pilanesberg is always good value. It is close to home for us so perfect for a mid week break or even a weekend away.
- Beverly Morrison

Stunningly beautiful, especially in winter, with the contrasts between the yellow grass and green trees.
- Debbie Stott

Pilanesberg is a beautiful game reserve with plenty of animals to see. We saw Rhino, Elephant, Giraffe, Lions and plenty of Zebra and Wildebees in the 3 hours we had in the park. The facilities are very good and it is very easy to drive around and see game.
