The Royal
Bafokeng Stadium, officially named the Royal
Bafokeng Sports Palace, is located in Phokeng in the North West province, just outside Rustenburg. Phokeng is in the
heart of the region inhabited by the Royal Bafokeng nation, which comprises 29
villages. The town is located approximately an hour and a half from Johannesburg.
The Royal
Bafokeng Palace is the pride of the
Bafokeng nation and was the dream of Kgosi Lebone II, the former king of
the Royal Bafokeng nation. A decade ago, King Kgosi Lebona told his people that
they would witness the phenomenon of soccer right in their back yards, and thus
the sports palace was built.
The stadium
is used to host rugby games, soccer matches
and is also used as an athletics track.
It is used to host the ABSA Currie Cup by the Leopards rugby team and is home
to the Premier Soccer League club, The Platinum Stars.
The
capacity of the stadium was increased from its original 38 000 to 42 000, and
now boasts 24 suits, for the 2010 Fifa World Cup. This massive upgrade was
completed in March, in time for the stadium to host 4 matches of the 2009 Fifa
Confederations Cup. The stadium was honoured with hosting 5 of the first round matches of the 2010 Fifa World Cup and
1 of the second round matches.
This royal
sports palace will be among the first to
provide a designated 'family section’. This is so that families with young children can enjoy professional sports
safely and comfortably. The stadium also sports a swimming pool section with seating for 250 people, tennis facilities, netball facilities and
ample parking with space for 550 cars, 95 taxis and 65 buses.
