The Schoemansdal Museum is a popular attraction in the Limpopo province, in the far north of South Africa. It lies 16 kilometres to the west of the town of Louis Trichardt and is also near Makhado. The northern parts of Limpopo are rich with Voortrekker history. Being so far north, many of the Voortrekkers viewed the area as a good place to start settlements as they perceived it to be sufficiently far from any British settlements, thus affording them the independence that they sought.
This was the case for Schoemansdal, and the Schoemansdal Museum now documents the life of such a Voortrekker settlement. The museum is not just your normal run of the mill museum though, a musty building filled with archaic displays. It is an open-air museum which is designed to recreate the village and put visitors in the boots of the Schoemansdal’s residents, giving them a real sense of what it was like to live in those days.
The original Schoemansdal settlement was established in 1948 but its existence was short-lived. In 1867, just 19 years later, the town was abandoned. During its heyday, the town’s population was 200 and headed up by Stephanus Schoeman. It was a successful little ivory trading post, with a number of Portuguese-run trading stores. The trade-off was that the Venda people in the area would provide the ivory in exchange for arms. At some point the relationship went sour though and the Voortrekkers were driven from the area. This is the life depicted in the reconstructed village that is the Schoemansdal Museum.
