Having opened its doors to the public in 1981, the South African State Theatre Complex is more than a conglomerate of theatres, but is a primary performing arts venue. Following its three-decade run, the complex has accommodated a variety of world-renowned performances, celebratory events, dinners, festivals, conferences, product launches and a miscellany of high-end functions.
Located in the heart of Tshwane, the South African State Theatre is a popular attraction for theatre enthusiasts and those who are looking to host events in an opulent setting.
Throughout the years, the South African State Theatre Complex has played host to a variety of world-class shows – ranging from opera, musical and children’s theatre. While many would argue over what the most memorable shows have been over the years, the most top-billed performances include two high-praised musicals, ‘Cats’ and ‘Serafina’.
Following a brief closure in the mid-1990’s, the complex was re-opened in 2001 and continues to play an important role in the development of the performing arts.
What makes the centre so popular is due to its sheer size and the number of venues that are available for use. As it stands, there are currently five theatres which have a seating capacity that accommodates 120 – 1300 audience members. There are also function rooms for business conference and the like as well as studios for performance artists looking for one last rehearsal practice.
For more casual meetups or for theatre-goers wanting a quick nibble and a drink, there are three onsite restaurants and bars, including the Arena Bar, Applause Champaign Bar and Theatre’s Restaurant. Not only can you expect efficient service, but the cuisine and snacks served up are incredibly satisfying too.
