Accommodation near Supersport Park Staduim - 17

The Supersport Park Stadium is a notable cricket grounds in Centurion, an upscale northern suburb nestled between Midrand and Pretoria in Gauteng.

The stadium, formerly known as ‘Centurion Park’, is the only sports ground in the world which has had a municipality named after it. Following the end of apartheid, ‘Verwoedsburg’ became the politically- neutral ‘Centurion’. The sports grounds received a recent name change after the televised company; ‘Supersport’ bought shares in the stadium.

The size of the grounds is expansive – with some 18 000 cricket watchers flocking to the grounds during the height of the cricket season and has undergone changes to incorporate 69 hospitality suites, 32 embankment suites and 40 wheelchair spaces.

The ground is a well-known venue and has played host to an array of notable cricket matches. In 2003, it was the chosen venue for the 2003 Cricket World Cup and the Indian Premier League in 2009. However, many a cricket enthusiast would agree that its biggest claim to fame was its hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy’s final that took place in 2009 – the 6th one-day cricket international tournament that saw an undefeated Australia annihilate their New Zealand opponents by six wickets. Many international players have walked upon the cricket pitch, including world famous batsman, Sachin Tendulkar who scored his 50th test match century at the stadium. Many domestic cricket matches have been played at Supersport Park Stadium, with local Cricket team, The Titans, playing all home games on these grounds since 2004.

While cricket is the main fixture of these grounds, it has also hosted some memorable concerts over the years, with performances by a number of premier entertainers. Luciano Pavarotti's ‘Farewell from Africa’ concert was a highlight for many a fan as well as an incandescent performance by Belinda Carlisle at the Rewind Festival.

The catering facilities in recent years have also been vastly improved. With the grounds boasting a capacity to pour 9000 beers per hour, game viewers can stay liquidated while watching a riveting match of cricket – thus beating the bother of long queues and missing out on the action. Fans of night cricket will be able to enjoy a game under the powerful stadium lights – considered to be best in the country.
