Accommodation near The University of the Free State
The University of the Free State is an exceptionally old tertiary education institution in the heart of South Africa’s interior. It boasts a large and diverse student body, an active research arm, an academic record to be proud of and excellent facilities for staff and students which are combined with a reassuring support network on the academic and personal level.
The university is spread across 3 campuses in the Free State, with the original campus being situated in the heart of Bloemfontein – the City of Roses. The university came into being in 1904 under the name Grey University College. In 2003 it extended its reach to the eastern Free State’s rural population and opened the Qwaqwa campus. In 2004 the South campus opened in the southern hills of Bloemfontein.
The university has 4000 staff members across the campuses and 33 000 students. There are 2000 international students too who represent 40 countries. The student body is spread across the faculties and incorporates undergraduate and postgraduate students.
There are 7 faculties at the university, which include the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Humanities.
Research, understandably, plays an important role at the university, as attested to by research programmes such as the Advanced Biomolecular Research programme and Technologies for Sustainable Crop Industries in Semi-Arid Regions.
Academics and research aside, the university has a
lively campus life with various student associations ranging from the political and cultural to religious and sport. There is also a
wide support network which covers the medical and emotional needs of staff and students.

Bloemfontein needs some attention - long grass and unmarked roads. It's a stunning city and it's a pity it's being neglected.

I often go to Bloemfontein for business and this small city is definitely growing on me. It is big enough to address your every need, but compact enough to feel more like a town, with friendly people and an absence of constant traffic jams.

Bloemfontein feels like it's inbetween a town and a city... big enough to have all the amenities, but small enough that locals will help you out when you get lost. I couldn't find my destination (due to construction) and a local helped me out with directions not once but twice!
