Accommodation near Walker Bay Nature Reserve
Walker Bay Nature Reserve is a beautiful
protected area on the South Western Cape coastline. It is situated to the east
of the popular whale-watching town of Hermanus and consists of 5 coastal areas,
4 of which are stabilised dunes. The final section is where the fun is to be
had.
The area in the reserve most often visited
is a 1000 hectare stretch of coastline between the Klein River estuary and De
Kelders, outside Gaansbaai. This section of the coast covers 17 kilometres, most
of which is beach. This impressive and stunning beach is known as Die Plaat.
The area, which experiences a Mediterranean
climate with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers (often accompanied by wind)
supports an endemic coastal vegetation group known as strandveld
vegetation. This vegetation is
characterised by low coastal fynbos which individually is not necessarily
beautiful, but on the whole contributes greatly to the scenic landscape of this
part of South Africa's coastline.
Although it is generally acknowledged that
the inhabitants of the Walker Bay Nature Reserve are very shy, that's not to
say they aren't there. It is in fact home to species such as the Cape clawless
otter, duiker, bushbuck, grysbok and steenbok. The ocean offers opportunities to
spot dolphins, and between the months of August and November, southern right
whales too.
The sea in this area is also full of fish
like kabeljou and galjoen, which are part of the reason angling is so popular
here. Hiking and picnicking are also popular endeavours. However if you do plan
on visiting the reserve for any of these activities, make sure you pick up a
permit (for fishing) and pass the Cape Nature office to pay your entrance fee.

Stanford Reviews
Stanford
Stanford is a quiet, laidback country town. The Stanford Harvest where we ate the most delicious oxtail, was fantastic. Birkenhead wine and beer tasting was great too. BUT be careful of Sundays - just about everything is closed - thank heavens for the Ou Meul - delicious food and excellent service.

We were very impressed with the way the village protects it's historic heritage, as well as the cleanliness and safe feeling one has when walking during the day and evening.
