Aliwal North Accommodatie
Aliwal North is the largely unknown ‘divorce child’ on the Orange River (also known as the Gariep River). It is a divorce child because it is right on the border of the Free State and the Eastern Cape is being claimed by both provinces, although it regards itself as independent of both provinces.
Aliwal North is the home of not 1 but 2 natural hot springs which are extremely concentrated with minerals and natural gases. The holiday resort and spa in the town is popular because its swimming pools are heated to roughly 34° Celsius , thanks to the naturally warm thermal springs.
As with many hot springs the world over, the springs’ mineral content is said to give the water healing properties, especially good for arthritis and rheumatism (undiagnosed joint issues). Other attractions in the town are the historical buildings such as the Kerkplein Museum and the Garden of Remembrance, which includes a British blockhouse.
The Buffelspruit Nature Reserve is not far from Aliwal North and is in fact situated on the same river that borders the town. It offers a nice change of scenery and alternative experience to the hot springs. The nature reserve is home to game such as ostriches, springbok, zebra and the black wildebeest.
Aliwal North was founded in 1850 by Sir Harry Smith, who named the town in commemoration of his win over the Sikh in the Battle of Aliwal, in India, during the First Sikh War in 1846.
Today the town is a farming community primarily producing, wheat, beef, wool, maize and dairy.
