Lady Grey Accommodatie

Lady Grey is a little-known hamlet situated on the northern border of the Eastern Cape. It lies roughly 55 kilometres from Aliwal North and is 260 kilometres from Bloemfontein, the capital city of the neighbouring Free State province.

The tiny little town is picturesque in more ways than one – one of the reasons it can safely be considered a gem. Lying in the foothills of the Witteberg Mountains, Lady Grey surrounded by breath-taking mountain vistas, vast tracts of vibrant farm lands, and at night, a blanket of innumerable stars. The air there is crisp and clean and the streets are lined with Victorian-style buildings, many of which have been pain-stakingly restored to their former glory.

The town’s architecture is one of the things which makes it so charming, and harks back to the late 1850’s when the town was established. It was built on the Waaihoek farm in a plan by the Dutch Reformed Church to establish a new congregation. It was named after the Lady Eliza Grey, wife of Sir George Grey, then the Cape governor.

While life in Lady Grey is admittedly super slow, with some amenities, such as a later-than-usual lunch, being slightly hard to come by, this is what makes the town so attractive to many visitors. One comes here absorb the nothingness, gaze at the stars and immerse oneself in nature – which is easy to do given the rural location of the town.

The surrounding mountains offer plenty of opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and 4x4ing, while fishing in the surrounding streams (with a permit) and bird watching also being popular endeavours. Joubert’s Pass, the 3rd highest pass in South Africa is, as you might imagine a scenic drive second to none and should certainly be undertaken if you find yourself in the area.
