Situated 210 kilometres east of the city of Pretoria, Belfast is a little town in the province of Mpumalanga, South Africa, not to be confused with Belfast in the Limpopo Province.
The town has a high economic value for South Africa as it has lucrative farming and mining industries. Dairy and sheep farming take place in Belfast, while maize, potatoes and timber are also farmed. Coal and granite are significant mining assets.
Belfast is not all business though as there are indeed attractions for leisure travellers, trout fishing for example. The cold rivers and streams along with the 6 well-stocked dams, ensure a healthy trout and bass population, keeping leisure fishermen more than occupied.
In addition, Belfast has several breath-taking hiking trails that allow one to experience the full beauty of the area, which is often considered one of the most scenic in the country. For flower lovers who enjoy more sedate activities, Belfast has many lovely gardens, with the tulip garden, that produces over 6 million bulbs for export annually, being the most renowned.
During the Anglo Boer War, Belfast played host to a concentration camp built by the British to house the Boer women and children. Several battles and smaller combat situations took place in and around Belfast.
Thirty kilometres from the town is the Komati River, the location of the Battle of Leliefontein. Belfast was named after the home town of the Irishman Richard Charles O’Neil, who owned the farm on which the town was built.
