The little town of Bethal is a gorgeous little farming settlement in the province of Mpumalanga. It is situated in the Highveld part of Mpumalanga, on the N17 highway between Johannesburg and Ermelo. Apart from being extremely pretty, the town is also full of history – making it a popular place to visit.
Bethel was established in 1880, on a farm known as Blesbokspruit. At the time the farm was owned by two couples, the Naudes and the du Plooys, and the new establishment was named after the wives, Elizabeth and Alida.
Today the town has a population exceeding 60 000, with many of its citizens being involved, in some form or other, in agriculture. Bethal lies in the heart of a farming district after all, where maize, sunflower seeds, sorghum, rye and potatoes are the main cultivars. In addition to farming, the community in and around Bethel also engages in mining, and there are a number of open cast coal mines, as well as 3 gold mines, in the vicinity.
One of the attractions of Bethel is its setting among the open grassland and low undulating hills of the Cosmos region of Mpumalanga. It lies on the Highveld part of the province, and in late summer and early autumn the countryside springs to life as myriad cosmos flowers bloom, carpeting the hills.
Given the important role that agriculture plays in the life of the town, it is worthwhile taking one of the town’s agricultural tours, which helps you to better understand the inner workings of this industry and what makes the town tick.
There are a number of historical buildings in the town which are worth perusing too – the old magistrate’s building is an excellent example. Built in 1910, it has been lovingly restored to its original state and it’s buildings like this which give the town its somewhat ‘olde world’ feel and endear it to many who visit and live there.
