Witbank, once a small farming community is today a large commercial centre in the Highveld region of Mpumalanga in South Africa. The name Witbank, meaning white ridge, is inspired by the white sandstone outcrop near the city. As with many places in South Africa, Witbank has a newer name too, eMalahleni, which means ‘place of coal’. Coal is one of Witbank’s main economic pillars and there are no fewer than 22 collieries in the immediate vicinity. The abundance of coal has given rise to other industries which rely on coal. For example you can find a number of power stations in the area and there is also a steel mill.

As with any city with a booming economy, the knock on effect is great and many businesses have thus set up offices in Witbank. Among the big businesses in the city you will find SAB Miller, Anglo American, Eskom and BHP Billiton.

Witbank is a rapidly expanding city with more and more of the surrounding farmland being bought up by coal mines, property developers and investors every year. This is because not only is Witbank a coal mining mecca, but it is also ideally located on an important transport route. At Witbank, the N4 from Pretoria and the N12 from Johannesburg converge and continue on to Komatipoort, the border town with Mozambique, and then Maputo. This route is known as the Maputo Corridor and is as valuable a trade route as Richards Bay or Durban.

As far as entertainment goes, Witbank is home to the Highveld Mall and next to that is The Ridge Casino, where you can gamble to your heart’s content, see a movie, try your hand at 10 pin bowling or eat in one of the restaurants. The Witbank Dam is a great place to picnic and while away a sunny afternoon.
