Blythedale Beach is a sanctuary for holidaymakers who are looking to get away from the overcrowded neighbouring bays of the North Coast. For the most part, Blythedale is near-deserted, where you’ll find the occasional dog-walker strolling along the sand, young children playing in the rock pools, or a fisherman patiently waiting for the fish to bite.
Located to the north of Tinley Manor, 72 kilometres from Durban Central, Blythedale Beach comprises of vast stretches of unspoilt, white sand ideal for long walks along the coastline; and a warm sea that bathers can happily swim in year-round.
Beach-goers often enjoy a good chuckle at sightings of the ghost crab, so called because of its translucent exterior. The crab scurries around in a haphazard fashion in between tides, in search of food.
What makes Blythedale Beach all the more appealing is that it adjoins with a small conservancy. Twitchers who are looking to spot birds should take a visit to the area. Here you’ll be able hear the caws of the African spoonbill or watch as the chestnut plover nestle in the crevices of a tree. Holiday-makers looking to immerse themselves in nature with the sights of lush vegetation and colourful birds, can book a weekend away at one of the self-catering units found in the area.
Travel a little further afield and you’ll reach the coastal village of Zinkwazi. Zinkwazi, known for its quiet and tranquillity, is home to a large lagoon. On the weekends and during the school holidays, families pack up picnic baskets and enjoy a day out in the sunshine.
Those who are looking for hiking routes, fishing activity and an abundance of birdlife should take a trip up to the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve. While small in size, a mere 100-hectares of land, the park is ideal for game viewing, picnicking and meandering through the many walking trails. The Fort Pearson and the Ultimatum Tree are national monuments found at the heart of the reserve that serve as reminders of the happenings that occurred during the Anglo-Zulu War.
