Durban Central Accommodation

Durban is the largest city in KwaZulu Natal. It is located on the East Coast of the country and is home to one of the busiest harbours in South Africa. One of its most often quoted claims to fame is that it is home to the largest population of Indians outside of the Indian subcontinent. It was also home to Mahatma Ghandi, the renowned human rights activist who championed the idea of peaceful protest.

As with many cities, as Durban has developed, many businesses have moved out of the centre along with many residents. However, despite the exodus there is still an awful lot going on in Durban's centre, and if you are looking for a vibrant area close to all of the city's major attractions, you can't go wrong!

For starters, Durban Central is the best part of the city for getting a taste, both literally and figuratively, of the city's Indian influence. The Victoria Street Market is just brimming with colours and smells as piles of spices line stall fronts and colourful, glittering saris burst out of small shops. The centre is also a great place to try one of South Africa's definitive street foods - bunny chow - which isa traditional curry served in a hollowed-out loaf (or half loaf) of bread.

Attractions in or near the centre abound too, such as uShaka Marine World, NorthBeach, Greyville Race Course (home to the Vodacom Durban-July), the slick Point development and the Durban Botanic Gardens.

Along the beach front you can buy curios of traditional Zulu bead work and get aride in an old-school rickshaw.Afterwards you can wander along the seaside promenade taking in views of the Indian Ocean and observing the other people going about their business.
