Botha's Hill is a settlement on the western outskirts of Durban, the largest city in KwaZulu Natal. It is located inland, beyond the satellite towns of Hillcrest, Kloof and Pinetown.
The area is picturesque to say the least and the vantage point offered by the hill makes up for its distance from the main city. It looks out over the rolling hills of the KwaZulu Natal countryside, with the most notable view being that of the Valley of 100 Hills, often touted as KwaZulu Natal’s best-kept secret. In the valley, the Umgeni and Umsunduzi Rivers meet. It is rich with gorges, forests, the rivers and hills. The area also makes up a section of the annual Duzi Canoe Marathon.
The Duzi Canoe Marathon isn’t the only sporting event which takes place near Botha’s Hill. One of the toughest sections ofthe Comrades Marathon, a 90 kilometre ultra-marathon run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, is located near Botha’s Hill. This is thanks to the 500 metre change in altitude over 22 kilometres.
The area was named after Cornelius Botha, a man who opened an overnight inn in the1840’s for wagon travellers journeying from Durban. It was known as Botha's Halfway House.
In the area surrounding Botha’s Hill there are about 6 different scenic driving routes, all well-marked, that take you on an adventure through quaint little villages and leafy towns. Break-off roads from the routes take one through the Krantzkloof Gorge and around the Inanda Dam.
One of the advantages of staying in Botha’s Hill is undoubtedly the climate. Unlike the coast, which can be very sticky in the summer humidity, Botha’s Hill is cooler but still a pleasant temperature for most of the year.
Phezulu Safari Park is an exciting tourism venue, situated in Botha’s Hill, only 35 km’s from central Durban. This picturesque park has magnificent views of the world-famous Valley of a 1000 Hills.
