Kloof Accommodatie
In KwaZulu Natal, as you descend into Durban, just before Westville, is the small village of Kloof, which forms part of the greater Durban area. The word kloof means ‘gorge’ in Afrikaans and the area was named after the deep gully formed by the Molweni Stream. Kloof was originally named Krantzkloof and used to form part of what was known as Richmond farm.
In 1901 Richmond farm was subdivided and pieces of the land were sold off to wealthy Durban residents and businessmen who built country house retreats there. Because Kloof is 500 meters above sea level, it is not as hot and humid as Durban Central is and was therefore preferred by the wives and children of the landowners. It was from these beginnings that the leafy suburb of Kloof was born.
The Kloof Gorge forms part of the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, a local attraction. The abundance of trees and fresh air create an idyllic setting for visitors, enhanced by the local population of monkeys. Its slight tropical climate sees a thicket of trees growing there that shield the houses from the hot Durban sun, while still letting in enough of it to make it look as though the tree leaves in Kloof sparkle.
These beautiful trees serve as homes to wildlife other than the ever-chatty monkeys too. They also bring a rich diversity of birds to Kloof, including the Crowned Eeagle also known as the African crowned eagle. The Crowned Eagle is the only member of the genus stephanoaetus that has survived; the second species belonging to this group became extinct after humans settled in Madagascar.
Kloof is intersected by the M13, a major road which forms part of the Comrades Marathon route, which takes place annually in June.
