Brackenhurst Verblyf

Technically speaking, Brackenhurst is a suburb in Johannesburg South, that is, south of Johannesburg’s original central business district. However, it is simultaneously a suburb of Alberton, a formerly independent town on Gauteng’s East Rand, which has been incorporated into the municipality of greater Johannesburg over the years, just like other East Rand towns such as Bedfordview and Germiston.

Alberton is to be found about 15 kilometres from the centre of Johannesburg and roughly 75 kilometres from Pretoria. Brackenhurst’s distance from two of Gauteng’s (and South Africa’s) most commercial cities makes it very attractive, as does its close proximity to some major transport routes, which allow you to get out and explore really easily.

In comparison to Johannesburg and Pretoria, where most of South Africa’s major business deals go down, the Alberton’s group of 18 suburbs are surprisingly lacking when it comes to commercial activity. For this reason many of Brackenhurst’s residents commute to work in Johannesburg proper. Another result of this is that the suburbs of Alberton are quiet, as most people are only there to relax and sleep. This has earned Alberton the reputation for being a so-called ‘bedroom city’.

Brackenhurst is neighboured by Brackendowns, Alrode and Randhart and is just south of the R554 and west of the R59. Amenities in the area include hospitals, grocery stores and various sporting facilities, but as previously mentioned, you won’t find any high-rise office blocks here. The Alberton City Shopping Mall is about as close as you’ll get to that sort of high life.
