Brits Accommodatie
Brits refers to both a district and a large town in South Africa’s North West province. The town is well-developed and contributes more than its fair share to South Africa’s economy. It is a thriving agricultural area and it is also home to a number of lucrative platinum mines.
The town initially developed on a farm known as Roodekopjes (Red Hills), which was owned by Johan Nicolaas Brits. His land was sold and then subdivided, a move which lead to the proclamation of the Brits township in 1923. The town was officially founded a year later in October 1924.
Today the town is an agricultural hub for an area which produces a range of produce but primarily citrus fruit, vegetables and various forms of grain. The climate of the area, with its hot summer (November to March) days with afternoon thundershowers and cooler winters (May-July) with dry, sunny conditions support the cultivation of such crops and has ensured that Brits has a secure cash-cow. The Hartebeespoort Dam, located 10 kilometres away is also a lifesaver as it supplies the Brits’ irrigation systems with water.
Brits is an easy drive from both Pretoria and Johannesburg, only 57 and 73 kilometres from the respective cities. It is connected to Gauteng by the N4 highway which makes the commute an uncomplicated one.
Attractions in the area include the Hartebeespoort Dam, which is a mecca for water-sport enthusiasts and is home to the Transvaal Yacht Club. Nearby De Wildt is home to the De Wildt Cheetah & Wildlife Centre, which has breeding programmes for cheetah as well as Southern Africa’s most endangered carnivore, the African wild dog.
