The suburb of Brooklyn, which shares a name with one of the most concentrated  areas of New York City, is located to the south east of Pretoria’s city centre.

Pretoria’s Brooklyn is an upmarket residential area which is tucked between the University of Pretoria in the north and the affluent suburbs of Groenkloof and Waterkloof in the south. The city centre is easily accessible, ensuring business people and tourists alike the opportunity to tap into all that the centre has to offer. This includes the Union Buildings (seat of parliament), the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens, important memorials and a host of business complexes.Brooklyn itself has much to offer. Its proximity to the university, one of South Africa’s most well-regarded tertiary institutions is a major plus, and something which attracts many people to the area. If you are interested in the arts, Brooklyn may hold appeal for you as two of its main attractions are intrinsically linked to this sphere of life.

The University of Pretoria’s Anton Van Wouw Museum gives visitors an insight into the life and work of this famous Afrikaans sculptor. The museum is housed in the artist’s old house. Here, you will get to see his studio, his sculptures and get a sense of what his life might’ve been like, moving through the rooms of his home.

The Union Buildings form the official seat of the  government and also houses the offices of the country’s president. Following the death of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratic president, a nine-metre bronze statue was unveiled at the landmark to commemorate his life.The Brooklyn Theatre is another point of interest in the area which regularly puts on plays shows and events from opera to comedy showcases.

Travel further afield to visit the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens. This 75-hectare oasis gives visitors a glimpse of different biomes – from wooded savannahs to dense forest.

Whether you’re visiting Pretoria for business or pleasure, Brooklyn is a convenient and pretty suburb to base yourself.
